Open cell or closed cell?
Both are spray foam, and both seal air leaks. Open cell is light and economical and belongs under the roof deck of most houses. Closed cell is dense, gives almost twice the R-value per inch and blocks moisture, so it belongs on steel and in crawl spaces.
| Feature | Open cell | Closed cell |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Soft, spongy foam that expands about 100 times | Dense, rigid foam that expands about 30 times |
| R-value per inch | About R-3.6 | About R-6.5 |
| Moisture | Lets vapor pass, so roof leaks show up | Acts as a vapor retarder at about 1.5" and thicker |
| Strength | Seals air, adds no strength | Bonds to steel and wood, stiffens walls and panels |
| Sound | Better at deadening noise | Some noise reduction |
| Where we use it | Attic roof decks and interior walls of homes | Metal buildings, barndos, shops, crawl spaces, rim joists |
| Price | Lower per inch | Higher per inch, less thickness needed |

Why spray foam pays off in North Texas
- Your ducts live in the attic. In most DFW homes the air handler and ductwork sit in an attic that can pass 130°F. Foam on the roof deck brings them inside. See attic spray foam.
- Steel sweats. Humid air on cold metal panels drips on tools, hay and drywall. Closed cell on the steel stops it. See metal buildings and barndominiums.
- Dust, pollen and noise come in through the gaps. Foam seals the cracks that batts and blown-in leave open.
- It doesn’t settle. Foam keeps its shape and R-value for the life of the building.
Spray foam questions
How much does spray foam cost in Dallas–Fort Worth?
It is priced per square foot of surface sprayed, per inch of foam, so a thin coat of closed cell and a thick coat of open cell can land at similar prices. The rates and typical job totals are on this page, and the calculator prices your own building in about a minute. The free measure sets your exact number.
Which foam do I need, open cell or closed cell?
For the roof deck of a typical house, open cell. For metal buildings, barndominiums, steel shops, pole barns and crawl spaces, closed cell, because it blocks moisture and stops condensation on steel. Some jobs use both, like a barndo with closed cell on the steel and open cell in the interior walls.
How long does a job take?
Most home attics take one day. Shops and smaller metal buildings take one to two days, and barndominiums usually two to three. Plan to stay out of a sprayed area for about 24 hours after we finish.
Do you remove old insulation?
Yes. If the old insulation in your attic is matted, wet or full of droppings, we vacuum it out before we spray. See insulation removal.
What areas do you serve?
